Title of thesis: INFLUENCES OF WAVE CLIMATE AND SEA LEVEL ON SHORELINE EROSION RATES IN THE MARYLAND CHESAPEAKE BAY Jia Gao, Master of Science, 2015 Thesis directed by: Professor Lawrence P. Sanford, University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) SWAN and a parametric wave model implemented by the Chesapeake Bay Program (CBP) were used to simulate wave climate from 1985 to 2005 in Chesapeake Bay (CB). Calibrated sea level simulations from the CBP hydrodynamic model were acquired. Spatial patterns of sea levels during high wave events were dominated by local northsouth winds in the upper Bay and by remote coastal forcing in the lower Bay. A dataset comprising shoreline erosion rates and related characteristics was combined with the wave and sea-level climates to explore the most influential factors affecting erosion. The results show that wave power is the most significant factor for erosion in the Maryland CB. Marsh shorelines present a nearly linear relationship between wave power and erosion rates, whereas bank shorelines are less clear. The results of this study are applicable at large scales. A more comprehensive data set is needed for building detailed local predictive relationships. INFLUENCES OF WAVE CLIMATE AND SEA LEVEL ON SHORELINE EROSION RATES IN THE MARYLAND CHESAPEAKE BAY

Assessing Embayed Equilibrium State, Beach Rotation and Environmental Forcing Influences; Tenby Southwest Wales, UK

The morphological change of a headland bay beach—Tenby, West Wales, UK—was analysed over a 73-year period (1941–2014). Geo-referenced aerial photographs were used to extract shoreline positions which were subsequently compared with wave models based on storm event data. From the 1941 baseline, results showed shoreline change rates reduced over time with regression models enabling a prediction o...

Sea Level Rise in Virginia – Causes, Effects and Response

Sea level rise (SLR) along Virginia’s coasts and around the Chesapeake Bay as measured by tide gauges is analyzed and discussed. It is shown that the SLR rates vary between one location to another and in most locations the rates increase over time (i.e., SLR is accelerating). The latest science of SLR is reviewed and the causes of the high SLR rates in Virginia are discussed. The impacts of lan...

Shoreline Change along Sheltered Coastlines: Insights from the Neuse River Estuary, NC, USA

Coastlines are constantly changing due to both natural and anthropogenic forces, and climate change and associated sea level rise will continue to reshape coasts in the future. Erosion is not only apparent along oceanfront areas; shoreline dynamics in sheltered water bodies have also gained greater attention. Additional estuarine shoreline studies are needed to better understand and protect coa...

Progress in coupling models of human and coastal landscape change

4 Humans are increasingly altering the Earth’s surface, and affecting processes that shape and 5 reshape landscapes. In many cases, humans are reacting to landscape-change processes that 6 represent natural hazards. Thus, the landscape is reacting to humans who are reacting to the 7 landscape. When the timescales for landscape change are comparable to those of human 8 dynamics, human and ‘natur...
